Corsica’s famous rally has an uncertain future; it is rumoured to be opting out of the World Rally Championship after changes to the schedule and the introduction of a new rotation system aimed at taking the sport to new audiences worldwide. The Tour de Corse is being dropped from the programme in 2009 along with New Zealand, Monte Carlo and Sweden. New events will be held in Ireland and Poland, whilst Norway, Cyprus and Australia also return to the series in 2009.
The Tour de Corse is an alpine-style tarmac rally held near the island’s capital Ajaccio. It is a fantastic spectacle with winding mountain roads, although it is much safer than in previous years. Due to smaller crowds than many of the other World Rally Championship events and the close proximity to the capital, the Tour de Corse is one of the best for spectators. This year’s rally runs from 10th – 12th October 2008.
