The author of the Dictionary of Sardinian, Professor Mario Puddu has published a guide to the grammar of the Sardinian language, the first of its kind to attempt to deal with all variations of the language.
Although the official language of Sardinia is Italian, Sardo is widely spoken and varies greatly from region to region and even between neighbouring villages. The island’s turbulent past is evident in the language’s influences which include Latin, Arabic, Spanish and Catalan.
Professor Puddu has been researching the grammar for five years; at 656 pages it is a comprehensive guide covering phonetics, syntax and history. It is written in Sardinian and so for many the author’s previous work, the dictionary (Ditzionàriu de sa limba e de sa cultura sarda, Cagliari: Condaghes 2000) will be a vital tool. You can translate from/to Sardinian using the online version of the Dictionary at www.ditzionariu.org
