The island of La Maddalena, situated between Sardinia and Corsica, is to host the 35th G8 Summit this summer from 8th to 10th July. Italy took over the Presidency of the G8 at the start of 2009 and will also host a series of meetings in the run up to the Summit.
The Sardinian archipelago of La Maddalena is a stunning unspoilt area made up of sixty islands which is recognised as a national marine reserve. Except for La Maddalena, the village of Stagnali on the island of Caprera and a few houses on Santa Maria, the archipelago is on the whole uninhabited –sailors, snorkellers and divers are attracted by the unspoilt natural beauty of the region and holidaymakers can book day trips cruising the islands.
The island of Caprera is famous as the final resting place for Giuseppe Garibaldi who sought exile on the island in the 19th century. He is buried on the island and the cemetery, house and outhouses he built make up the Garibaldi Compendium, one of Italy’s most popular museums.
