Last week the Mediterranean island of Sardinia hosted the 27th Giro di Sardegna (Tour of Sardinia) a cycling event held over five stages. The overall winner was Italian Daniele Bennati who had overtaken the leader’s jersey at the end of the 147 kilometre fourth stage on Friday. He held off pressure during Saturday’s fifth round to finish ahead of Oscar Gatto and Alessandro Ballan.
The stage race attracted 15 teams of 8 riders who competed on the streets of Sardinia over eight days, ending in Cagliari in the south. The majority of participants were Italian but the event also attracted cyclists from Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Russia, Belarus, UK, Austria and Lithuania.
Bennati adds his name to the list of prestigious past-winners dating back to the first race in 1958. The last edition of the Giro di Sardegna was held in 1997 but this year’s success is already looking promising for a 2010 edition.
