One of the most important events in the island’s calendar, Carnival started on 17th January which is also known as the festival of Sant’ Antonio. Carnival will continue until Ash Wednesday, although the biggest celebrations will be held on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) and Carnival Thursday.
Masks play an important part in the festival, Carnival was traditionally a time in which normal social rules were abandoned and partygoers were masked to hide their identity. Events are held across the island attracting thousands of visitors:
- Experience lively colourful parades in Cagliari, Tempio, Pausania, San Gavino, Monreale, Bosa and Iglesias.
- Watch traditional horse racing events in Oristano and Santu Lussurgiu.
